Conversation Starters

Become a Leader!

It is always nice to sit back and relax and read others' poetic posts online, but we can not evolve the future of senior living by sitting back and letting things happen around us!! ALFA has posted some conversation starters below to encourage your participation and leadership. If you would like to submit a conversation starter, please do so by emailing Exchange@ALFA.org. ~We look forward to your thoughts, opinions and wisdom, and thank you for sharing your experiences.

How Has Your Community Integrated Technology?
Video chats and Skype are enabling adult children and aging parents the ability to stay closer and see each other more often than ever before. How has your community integrated technology? Do you have suggestions on ways in which families and senior living communities can help elders best utilize technology? Does your community have activities focused around teaching seniors new social networking and video chat platforms? How does the use of technology impact your residents and their families?  Share your thoughts.

What Is Your Best Business Advice for Newbies in the Senior Living Industry?
Give new assisted living communities your 2 cents. In your experience, what are the minimum/maximum staffing needs? What kind of programs and activities work? How do you stay connected with the resident's family?... Share your thoughts.

If You Could Change One State Law Affecting Assisted Living, What Would You Change?

If you could change any state law or regulation governing how you run your senior living company or community because it is unreasonable, costly, frivolous, or compromises the quality of life for the seniors in your care, what would you change and how would you change it? Share your thoughts.

What are the Best Strategies for Helping Overcome Resistance to Assisted Living?

What are the very best strategies you employ for helping a family member overcome irrational resistance of their elderly parent to move from home to an independent or assisted living community? How do you best assist a family member in helping a senior parent understand his/her need for assisted living? Share your thoughts.

How Will Assisted Living Evolve to Remain Relevant for Baby Boomers?
One only needs to look at our cousins, the nursing homes, to wonder what could be if we don't remain on the forefront of change. How will assisted living services evolve? Are you working with government to ensure favorable public policy and operating environments? Are you evolving products based on customer demand, and ensuring the assisted living philosophy, strategies and principles reflect an evolving, changing culture? Share your thoughts.

What Keeps You Up at Night?
Periodically, ALFA asks senior living professionals (like you) what keeps them "up at night", i.e., areas where they could use some new ideas to do a better job for their company and for the residents they serve. The last time we asked this question was in 2007. A lot has changed in three years. In your day-to-day work as a senior living professional, what keeps you up at night these days and why? Share your thoughts.

How Do You Gain Customer Trust?
It takes a lot of faith for a customer to trust us in the care of a loved one. How do you demonstrate during the sale why a prospective resident or family member should trust you? And, if something happens that violates the trust -- whether real or perceived; how do you address it? Share your thoughts.
